What Is Qigong?

Qigong literally translates to “life energy work”. It can be characterized as a mind-body practice that enhances both mental and physical well-being by combining posture, movement, breathing techniques, self-awareness, and focused intent. There are numerous styles, forms, and lineages of Qi Gong, each with unique applications but sharing similar core theories.
One of the goals of Qigong is to cultivate life energy, known as “Qi”. So, what exactly is ‘Qi’ or life energy? It might seem a bit perplexing if you’re encountering it for the first time. You may have heard of acupuncture, which can aid in healing certain ailments and alleviating pain. But why is that?
Acupuncture and Qigong are integral components of traditional Chinese medicine. In this system, Qi, or life energy, flows through our bodies along pathways known as meridians. Numerous meridians traverse various organs and interconnect with each other. When a meridian becomes blocked, it can lead to feelings of illness or pain. Acupuncture employs needles to stimulate the affected meridian, clear the blockage, and promote healing or pain relief. On the other hand, Qigong is designed to enhance blood and Qi circulation through specific meridians and around particular organs by positioning the body in a certain manner, coupled with deep breathing techniques, to prevent or alleviate blockages in the meridians. This is why practicing Qigong regularly offers numerous health benefits.
There are numerous Qigong forms that can be practiced while sitting, standing, lying down, or even in motion. Certain Qigong styles emphasize breathing techniques aimed at achieving mind-body harmony, emotional and spiritual satisfaction, Qi enhancement, and healing. Others focus on the repetitive process of tensing and relaxing the muscles to strengthen internal organs and build more robust muscles, tendons, and ligaments.
