Why can Ba duan jin improve health?

Ba duan jin (eight pieces of brocade translated in English) includes eight sets of Qigong exercises. It is designed based on the theory of meridians in classic Chinese medicine. According to classic Chinese medicine, Qi or life energy flow in our body through meridians. There are many meridians that pass through different organs and make connections. If the meridians are blocked, it can cause all kinds of illnesses.

Movements of Ba Duan Ji involve turning, stretching, and twisting of limbs, the torso, and the entire body. These movements can relieve the spasm of peripheral small blood vessels and improve microcirculation. It can dredge meridians, regulate internal organs, and prevent illness.

For example, the first set of Ba duan jin, described as ” push hands up to hold the sky..” consists of stretching of the limbs, wrists, and the trunk combined with deep breathing.  These movements can regulate the distribution of blood flow in the thoracic and abdominal cavities; help to adjust the energy and blood flow through the lung, stomach, and liver. Stretching the torso and up limbs can improve the flexibility of the joint and prevent cervical and shoulder problems.

Classic Chinese medicine believes that the flexion and extension of the arms help to unblock or prevent the blockage of the heart and lung meridians. Turning the torso can stimulate two major meridians and the acupuncture points called “Dazhui” and “Mingmen”, and strengthen the kidney and the waist. That is why practicing Ba Duan Jin has many health benefits.

What is the best way to practice Ba Duan Jin?

To get a better result, when practicing Ba Duan jin, the movements should be gentle, slow, round, and coherent. It is more effective when practicing this way and for a longer period of time.
