Do you often feel shoulder and neck stiffness or pain after sitting in front of a computer for a long time? What usually do you do when this has happened to you? Have you tried to relax your shoulders and neck and release the pain by doing some exercises or doing nothing?
Shoulder and neck pain could cause various problems if don’t take care of it early. Studies have found that if the shoulders and neck pain lasts for more than a year, the brain could shrink by 5% to 11%!
Why? This has a lot to do with the structure of the shoulder and neck.
There are two large arteries in the neck; the shoulder and neck are like the crossroads of the human body and are the main channels for Qi and blood to be supplied to the head. Although the neck only occupies a short part of our body, all major meridians, such as the Du Meridian, Ren Meridian, Stomach Meridian, Large Intestine Meridian, Small Intestine Meridian, Triple Burner Meridian, Gallbladder Meridian, and Bladder Meridian all pass through the neck! Shoulder and neck pain is often a symptom of the clog or stagnation in meridians. Once clogged, problems such as chubby face, double chin, facial swelling, and neck laxity will occur! More seriously, it can also affect the brain’s function due to lacking sufficient Qi and blood supply to the brain!
Based on Traditional Chinese, the human body circulates from top to bottom, when there are more toxins in the human body, the first place where toxins accumulate is the shoulders and neck. The accumulation of toxins will cause hardening and aging of the shoulders and neck. The cervical spine is like the roots of a big tree. When the shoulder and neck are blocked, it will cause insufficient nutrition of the pituitary gland in the head and cannot secrete growth and estrogens well. Especially for women, it will directly lead to endocrine disorders and early menopause.
When toxins accumulate in the shoulders and neck, they will compress blood vessels and prevent blood from being transported well to the head and face. This will cause dizziness, headaches, insufficient oxygen supply to the brain, fatigue, poor sleep quality, memory loss, and more. It can cause yellowing, darkening, spots, skin aging, etc. on the face.
Here are a few tips that help you to release and prevent Shoulder and neck pain.
- Don’t sit in the same position too long. When you have to work with computers every day, remember to have a break every one or two hours, and get up, move around, and do some exercises to stretch your neck and shoulders to ensure that the ligaments on both sides of the neck can be stretched evenly in a short period of the time to improve local blood supply. Remember to move gently.
- Take 10 minutes to do some dynamic Qigong exercises during the break, or several times daily. It is an easy, effective, and fun way to relax your shoulders and neck and improve your overall health. Both BaDuanJin and YiJinJing are dynamic Qigong created several thousand years ago in China. Ba Duan Jin includes eight sets of exercises, and four of these sets, such as set 1, set 2, set 4, and set 5 involve stretching the neck and shoulders and stimulating meridians. Similarly, YiJinJing consists of 12 sets of exercises, and half of those exercises can prevent or unclog the blockage in the meridians.
