As we age, our internal organs will also gradually age. Among those changes in the liver are the most obvious. Intrahepatic blood flow at the age of 60 could be 40% to 50% lower than that at the age of 20. Meanwhile, the number of liver cells and liver metabolic function also decreases with age.
The liver is the most important detoxification and metabolism organ in our body. It will affect the normal metabolism and operation of the whole body and will have a great impact on physical health. Therefore, we must take good care of our liver and prevent “premature” liver aging!
Here is a simple movement that can help you protect your liver: make a fist with both hands and hold them firmly.
Why is that?
According to Traditional Chinese medicine, Qi or life energy flows in our body via meridians. There are many meridians passing through different organs, and making connections with one another. If there is a blockage in your meridians, you may feel ill or pain. Several acupuncture points on our hands are connected to our liver and kidneys through meridians. The liver stores blood, and the kidneys store essence. Essence and blood coexist and nourish each other. When you make a fist with both hands and hold them firmly, it stimulates the meridians and helps nourish the liver, collect essence and Qi, and improve internal balance.
Because of that, several Qigong forms involve gripping hands firmly. For example, the “Qinglong Exploring Claw Position” of the Yi Jin Jing, the Baduanjin’s “Closing fists with angry eyes to increase strength”, the Twelve-Duanjin’s “Sit with eyes closed and meditative, hold firm and meditate” and so on.
You can grip your fist firmly whenever your arms are free. Such as while riding in the car, chatting, watching TV, etc. Here is how to do it.
Clasp the thumb in the palm of the hand, with the fingertips at the root of the ring finger, then bend the other four fingers, and use a little force to hold the thumb firmly as is shown in this picture.
