How Inadvertently “making a fist” Can Precent Liver Aging

  • by

As we grow older, our internal organs also gradually undergo aging. The changes in the liver are among the most noticeable. By the time we reach 60, intrahepatic blood flow can be 40% to 50% lower compared to when we were 20. Additionally, both the number of liver cells and the liver’s metabolic function decline with age.

The liver serves as the body’s primary organ for detoxification and metabolism. Its health is crucial for the normal metabolic processes and overall functioning of the body, significantly influencing our physical well-being. Therefore, it is essential to take good care of our liver and prevent “premature” aging of this vital organ!

Here’s a straightforward movement that can assist in protecting your liver: create a fist with both hands and hold them tightly.

Why is this important?

As per Traditional Chinese medicine, Qi, or life energy, circulates through our body via meridians. Numerous meridians traverse various organs and connect with one another. If there’s a blockage in your meridians, you might experience discomfort or pain. Several acupuncture points located on our hands are linked to our liver and kidneys through these meridians. The liver is responsible for storing blood, while the kidneys store essence. Essence and blood coexist and support one another. By making a fist with both hands and holding them firmly, you stimulate the meridians, which aids in nourishing the liver, gathering essence and Qi, and enhancing internal balance.

Due to this, many Qigong forms require a firm grip of hands. For instance, set 9 exercises in Yi Jin Jing, “Black Dragon Exploring Claw “, and set 7 exercises in Ba Duan Jin, “Punching with eyes wide open”.

You can grip your fist tightly whenever your arms are free, such as when you’re in the car, having a conversation, or watching TV. Here’s how to do it.

First, tuck your thumb into the palm of your hand, placing your fingertips at the base of your ring finger. Then, bend the other four fingers and apply a bit of pressure to hold the thumb securely, as illustrated in this picture.
